Should the
government stop taxing Social Security benefits?
Comments:
1. I think as seniors we are going to need to get used to high
taxes because the benefits that we will be receiving can't be
funded without the government being able to generate the revenue
to pay for them. I just hope that our government doesn't decide
to stop charging taxes and providing benefits. |

Have you ever shopped Sears on the internet?
Comments:
1. I've used the website to compare merchandise, but I've never
made a purchase at Sears online. I always go to the stores to
make any purchases at Sears. I would never purchase an
appliance, hardware or lawn and garden online. I rely on the
expertise of the sales associate to help me with this type of
purchase. I can also say, I would NEVER purchase any clothing
online at Sears either. I can also state that "I DON'T shop at

Sears Holdings acting CEO W. Bruce Johnson is a
former management consultant whose pedigree includes executive
stints at the company's Kmart unit, the French discounter
Carrefour and Colgate-Palmolive Co. He has helped usher Sears
through one of the most difficult periods in retail history.
Johnson has been Interim CEO for 28 months. Should Edward Lampert select him as the permanent CEO of Sears Holdings?
Comments:
1. No CEO should be permanent. Either select him as the CEO or
replace him with someone else who is hopefully more qualified.
2. He has been a "YES" man all that time and that is why he has
been an interim CEO for so long. Sears needs someone with a
"killer retail instinct" who will go after the business with
whatever it takes. Like Kohl's does. |

The
centerpiece of Sears reinvention plan is an online service
called MYGOFER. The goal is to appeal to customers who want to

the mail. Right now, MYGOFER lets shoppers in Chicago, Boston,
New York and Washington, D.C. buy online and pick up their items

Starting September 13, David Friedman, most recently president -
Americas at RazorFish, a digital agency - will run the marketing
at the company's Kmart and Sears units. He is the third head of
marketing at Sears Holdings since Edward Lampert took control in
2005.
Do you expect the marketing effort at Kmart and Sears to go in a
dramatically different direction under David Freidman?
Comments:
I would like to think so but I feel like I would just be
whistling Dixie. What does a digital agency have to do with
merchandising? Mr. Lampert keeps trying to make a silk purse out
of a pig's ear. All Sears has to do is give the customer a
consistant message of value and price - and back up that message
with a true satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. SERVICE,
SERVICE, SERVICE.
As much as I would like to see him succeed, he will only do so
if Lampert has enough faith in him to give him free reign to run
the marketing efforts of Sears. Based upon past experience with
Lampert's management style, this is highly unlikely.
As much as I would like to see him succeed, he will only do so
if Lampert has enough faith in him to give him free reign to run
the marketing efforts of Sears. However, based upon past
experience with Lampert's management style, this is highly

I think Eddie will continue to control marketing by controling
the pursestrings. But, somehow Sears (like some of our
competition) needs to get a sense of urgency (Kohls) and value
(also Kohls) while driving traffic into the stores week after
week. Too many customers only think of Sears for planned
purchases of major items, and since mall traffic is also down,
we have too few shopping trips to succeed. Bring back the
excitement with ongoing traffic & transactions & draw customers
back into our stores to rediscover Sears!! We can win, but only
with a total revision of our current retail marketing.

4. I wonder if the business gained will pay for the light bill for

groceries, household items and electrical items prices are not

buying all of its output. Unless the private sector is encouraged
through lower taxes, less bureaucracy and stop shipping jobs out of
our country we will become a third world country. Spending must be
cut and entitlements must be addressed and resolved and possibly
cut. Illegial immigration must be stopped by putting at least 60,000

Beginning next year, Sears has

Sears Holdings recently announced
another development in its clothing business with the hire of
Lana Cain Krauter as SVP and President-Sears Apparel. Ms.
Krauter was most recently president/chief merchandising officer
for Bealls Department Stores. She also held senior positions
with J.C. Penney Company, Goody's Family Clothing and SHC.
What advice would you offer Ms. Krauter as she gets ready to
lead Sears efforts in clothing.
Comments:
1. Take a hard, honest look at our competition, and ask
yourself why we're continuing to lose traffic & transactions
month after month. Our Customers vote with their feet and their
wallets, and they're shopping elsewhere in increasing numbers.
We can't relocate every store away from our major mall locations
with declining customer traffic, but we can aggresively reach
out to customers with better compelling reasons to shop Sears
for the right assortment and unbeatable pricing spelled out in
dominant & frequent timely advertising. Get the assortments
right, price them sharply, stay in stock and shout this message
endlessly! (See Kohls game plan, which seems to be working!) We
can, and must, make this happen before it's too late!!
2. I still have a question regarding the life insurance change -
Why the change from Metlife in the first place?
3. Shop Kohl's for clothing and do exactly what they do, for
display, pricing, promotion, etc. Get out of the "old stodgyness",
lack of presentation, lack of depth, lack of assortment, lack of
promotion and pricing and keep up to date with trends and
styles. Sears is not noted for adult clothing at all (they are
for some children's clothes)and Kmart is noted for "cheep," and
I do not mean inexpensive, clothes. It will be a real challenge
and will take time and advertising dollars which Mr. ED will not
be willing to spend. |

In another attempt to revive its apparel
business, Sears will be featuring this summer a new clothing
line designed by Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe Kardashian of E!
reality show "Keeping Up With Kardashians" fame.
Will this tie in with the Kardashian sisters bring in a new
contemporary customer for Sears?
Comments:
1. I have always thought there was a "lack of understanding"
on how to merchandise and sell in Sears and now I know. What a
joke, how can anyone in Sears think such an arrangement can
benefit anyone except the Kardashinas and make Sears look more
foolish. Sears must wake up to reality and begin to understand
what it takes to get customers into the stores and the
Kardashin's are not it.
2. Yes, but limited probably to few. Not the answer that Sears
needs. There is a business that requires replacement or
merchandise, The Kids Store. The size is constantly changing.
Sears has let this business travel to Kohls, Target, Walmart and
others. The traffic brings Mothers to the store. Isn't she the
primary shopper? Assortment of Merchandise is one thing, how you
market and display it is another. Racks and Stacks don't seem to
be the answer. Fashion is a presentation thing. Not happening at
Sears. Sears dominated the hosiery and undergarment business, no
longer. This is the traffic and promotional line of goods that
brings people into the store. Fashion is quite the different
story.

Is Sears Holdings' stock a good buy today, taking
into account the current price multiples, the consistency of
past earnings and cash flow, and the amount of expected growth?
Comments:
1. A good buy - NO. There is a lot of value in Sears, especially
if they knew how to merchandise and get customers into stores to
purchase, but until they face up to that reality - it is not a
good buy.
2. When you put nothing into an asset and continually skim the
diminshing profits eventually you will be left with nothing |

Last week Sears announced that
the 2011 annual meeting will be held at its headquarters in Hoffman
Estates, Illinois on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
Do you plan on attending
this meeting? If not, why not?
Comments:
1. It has been my experience that
it makes no difference what questions are asked, what answers
are given, the management and board (Ed Lampert) are going to do
just what they want, and if they do not start paying attention
to what people (customers) are telling them they will go the way
of Montgomery Ward.
2. NO LONGER A STOCKHOLDER
3. Too far Not interested
4. Don't own Sears stock anymore |

After Sears so-so 5
years and a dismal 2010 holiday season, Wall Street analysts
paint a bleak picture for the future of Sears Hold-ings
Corp., which they expect to fall further behind rivals in the
hotly contested retail market in 2011. Nevertheless, investors
are putting persona over prospects, trusting that Chairman Eddie
Lampert's track record of investment success can dig Sears out
of its 5-year rut.
Do you think Lampert can succeed in turning Sears around this
year?
Comments:
1. not this year
economy has to pick up quite a bit and store personnel have to
get better (like knowing the product and actually helping the
customer)
2. He does not understand retailing and is ignoring the stores'
physical features, allowing them to fall into disrepair. Is only
interested in buying back shares with available cash, thereby
enriching himself and other shareholders, but the stores are
continuing to go down hill due to lack of funds to improve the
facilities. A sad situation.
3. I certainly hope so but Mr. Lampert's track record of
investment success is not digging Sears out of a 5 year rut but
putting Sears deeper into the rut. Mr. Lampert is out for one
thing and that is to wring every cent out of Sears he possibly
can and then dump it in the trash. Customers vote with their
pocketbooks and Mr. Lampert is an expert in picking pockets.
4. Too little, too late. Competition has momentum, Sears
doesn't. Sad, but true.
5. our local sears club is disappointed with your bias against
the past speaker of the house and leader of the senate. the new
health bill may not be perfect but, its very important to
seniors, middle class hold the pharma, greedstreet, big business,
and the wealthy to help us with health care. our newsletter
should reflect that. you have not done that. we donate every
year because you speak for sears retirees. thankyou, mel spatt/scranton
sears retiree club..toolguy609@aol.com
6. No, he doesn't have a clue how to do it. With today's
announcements, I would tell anyone who works in the stores,
"Watch Out," you may be next on the chopping block! Good Luck to
all those faithful Sears employees! View
7. Lampert has never been, nor will he ever likely become a
retailer. He is a successful investor, however, and may have
some yet to be demonstrated method of generating profit from his
K-Mart/Sears venture. But it will not likely come out of
retailing success.
8. The Internet will save Sears Holdings!!! Stay with Sears. It
will be a real money maker. Do not bet against Eddie.
9. As an employee I see first hand daily the effects of not
investing in the stores. The stores look dated from no remodels
for years and equipment needed to do the work is old and
unreliable. Employees mostly dont stay long due to minimum wage
pay with no raises ever and a very poor benefit package
including no match on the 401k plan. On top of that priorities
are all about selling credit applications, extended warranties
and shop your way rewards programs. There is not enough cash
left at this point to turn around the business because so much
was squandered on stock buybacks. I don't see how it can be
turned around at this point. trust me hardly any of the
employees care that much because they generally work 10 to 20
hours a week with no benefits.

Sears Holdings recently
published its Winter 2011 issue of ALUMNI Newsletter. Does this
newsletter meet your expectations for appropriate information
and news as a Sears/ Kmart retiree?
Comments:
1.
Although it is nice to
receive it, it doesn't begin to tough on the real problems of
Sears/KMart, and it is not intended to. It is more of a "feel
good" publication designed to make you think operations within
the Company are just fine. (And I sure hope, for all out sakes,
they get better) |

A number of states have
introduced e-Fairness legislation which would require out-of-state
online retailers with a nexus in the state via online affiliates to
collect the appropriate state sales tax. This could have a direct
impact on purchases made at amazon.com.
Do you favor such legislation?
Comments:
1. If I go to another State and buy something I do not pay my
State's sales tax. Why should that be any different when I purchase
online from out of my state? This is just another way for "your
pocket to be picked".
2. This is not a new tax. There has never been a debate that
residents of states with sales taxes are supposed to pay that tax on
their purchases. As consumers have grown more comfortable with
online shopping, the chance to avoid sales tax is an incentive to
give their business to Web merchants. That simply is not fair. Local
merchants are the heart of a community’s economy. They don’t just
sell goods; they provide employment for their own workers and for
employees of a wide network of businesses that support the retail
community. They bring customers into their local communities.
3. We tax everything else why not. The politicians have to live too.
Illinois wants to tax retirement so they can get out of the hole
they dug themselves into.

The Spring 2011 issue of STRAIGHT
TALK was recently released and also available on our web site.
Did you find this issue informative?
Comments:
1. Your issues get better and better. I especially enjoyed your
lead article about why Sears changed insurance carriers and the
problem with Prudential. I wish Sears would give us this news
without us retirees having to ask for it. Keep up the good work!
2. Another great issue -- both informative about Sears, then and
now.
3. Very informative. The answer on the change of life insurance
companies put a different perspective on the issue. I just wish
Sears/KMart would let everyone know "up front" before they
create a big uproar. Also the article on General Wood was great
and just as valuable today as it was then. It's to bad Sears/KMart
don't follow it. "The customer is our real employer" and the
Company is loosing them by their actions and lack of actions.
4. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK |

Do you think Sears Holdings has a
chance of reinventing itself if it puts more emphasis on its
hard goods and either cuts down or improves its apparel
offerings?
Comments:
1. If they will just "do it".
Most of the time it's just talk with no real follow through.
They must have real value, sharp pricing, and the merchandise
customers are looking for along with a good sustained
advertising. Just look at the competition.
2. Sears has lost its identity with the public that at one time
in the distant past loved the retail icon.
3. yes ,but a lot will have to do with the way employees handle
customers and the way the company treats employees. jus my 2
cents
4. I DUNNO LOL
